UnderGrowth is an accidental album. In 2008 when our old PC died we decided to go over to the dark side and buy an iMac, and I set about trying to get my head around the technology. I started by having a play with iMovie (you can have a look at some of my efforts, if you like, at http://nz.youtube.com/user/LaurentMark), then, with lots of encouragement and suggestions from my good friend Robbie Duncan, I got stuck into recording a few demo tracks in Garageband – and got a bit carried away!

I suppose you could call this a lo/hifi album. Most the tracks are recorded in GB, though the guts of Dream # 1, and some other segments were put together on a Boss Micro-BR, Hey Dad It’s Me and Undergrowth on an old Akai digital 8-track, and Living The Life (a little nod to D’Arcy Clay’s Jeuss I Was Evil) was originally done on an ancient Tascam 4 track Portastudio (some of this gear has long since given up the ghost). The most expensive mic I have is an SM58 – the trick is to make it sound like a Neuman. My challenge to myself was to try and make a couple of thousand dollars worth of home studio sound like a fifty thousand dollar deal – “a silk purse from a sow’s ear”. Whether or not I succeeded you’ll have to judge. What I think I did succeed in was putting down a pretty detailed sketch of my own musicality – there are no other players at all on the album, except for the ones sampled in loops.

I’ve also been going through a phase of personal re-alignment. I’ve found myself gently taken aside and given time to grow. As someone who’s been used to being ‘out there’ in the world, I’ve needed to learn the art of flying under the radar.

UnderGrowth is dedicated to all of you who know - or would like to know - the quiet joy of obscurity, which I’m slowly but surely coming to appreciate. I’d also like to thank those of you who’ve gently hassled me over the years to do another album with lots of electric guitars and big drums – this is it.

All I Do 03:48
ALL I DO Every day when I awake I get out of bed that’s all I do. Every night I turn out the light lay down my head that’s all I do. The sun comes up sun goes down the world spins around (& round & round) that’s all we do. I wrote this song it didn’t take long and you can sing too (if you want to) that’s all we do that’s all we do.

CAT OUT OF THE BAG A tiny ripple, no matter how small touches the edges of the deepest pool and everything we do matters somewhere one candle in a big, dark room chases the shadows, melts away the gloom everything we do matters somewhere I'm going to pick up this ball-point pen I'm going to change the world I play the chord and I play it again I'm going to change the world Some things I did I didn't intend but you can never take them back again and everything we do matters somewhere you let the cat jump out o the bag he hits the floor running, he never looks back 'cos everything he do matters somewhere I'm going to pick up this ball-point pen I'm going to change the world I play the chord and I play it again I'm going to change the world Every word that I ever said echoes somewhere in somebody's head everything we do matters somewhere and if you listened to this song something will change, and it won't be long 'cos everything we do matters somewhere I'm going to pick up this ball-point pen I'm going to change the world I play the chord and I play it again I'm going to change the world.

Dream #1 04:50
Dream #1 Some people dream of money Some people dream of fame Some of us hope for love Sometimes we dream in vain Me I'm just a simple man And it seems to me That peace the whole world over Could be more than just a dream Because everybody needs a dream Everybody needs a dream Look around and you'll see what I mean Everybody needs a dream Some people dream of tomorrow Some dream of yesterday Some of us have a vision Some just dream our lives away But me I'm a peaceful man And it seems to me That peace the whole world over Could be more than just a dream Because everybody needs a dream ...

Hope 05:28
HOPE Well I’ve still got hope, after all these years And I’ve still got faith, enough to get me there I’ve still got love down in my soul These three things are going to make me whole Well I’ve still got breath, here I am again And I’ve still got words to say the things I want to say I’ve still got dreams hidden in my heart They don’t seem like much sometimes But that’s where I start Well I’ve still got angst, it rises up some days I’ve still got a few questions now and then About the Narrow Way And I still get afraid of the dark at night But if I know you’re somewhere near I’m going to be alright Blessed are those who stand and wait We’re all lined up at the Pearly Gate Blessed are those who still believe One day even the blind will see Well I’ve still got days out in front of me And I can’t see much up ahead But one thing I can see Is that I’ve still got hope and faith and a song to sing With a little bit of love thrown in I’ll have everything.

Poetree 04:56
POETREE There’s a tui singing right outside I think he must be on a natural high To sing like that, and be able to fly Well if he’s not a happy bird Then the world really is absurd If he’s not happy, then I don’t know why. There’s a little song in everything Winter holds the seeds of spring So come on, have a go, do your own thing It’s poetree. Some days I feel like I’ve got nothing to say People can be funny that way And if I had a penny I’d spend it today But I come on like the prodigal son It’s a wonder I get anything done, sometimes You think about these things too hard They’re going to blow you away. But there’s a little song in everything Winter holds the seeds of spring So come on, have a go, do your own thing ‘cause it’s poetree. Inspiration is like a shout You never know when one might break out And sometimes you just have to open your mouth Like that tui singing right outside Just to listen to him makes me feel high And if I’m not happy, then I don’t know why. There’s a little song in everything Winter holds the seeds of spring So come on, have a go, do your own thing It’s poetree.

Crazy 05:05
CRAZY If I act crazy just ignore me I’ll probably work it out in an hour or two If I act crazy please forgive me I never mean to take it out on you when I act crazy Sometimes I crawl into myself like an ostrich I pretend I’m somewhere else but you, you see through my disguise through my silence and through the clouding of my eyes well I should have known that I I cold never hide from you because your love sees right through me love sees right through me when I act crazy Once, once I was a child and I talked child talk I learned to pout, I learned to whine by now you’d think I’d grow out of these gsmes but it’s amazing how some things sty the same still I never thought that I I would learn the lie that men aren’t supposed to cry men aren’t supposed to cry but I act crazy… … just ignore me I’ll probably work it out in an hour or two If I act crazy please forgive me I never mean to take it out on you when I act crazy.

Someday 04:47
SOMEDAY Young men see visions and old men dream dreams little glimpses of heaven and how it could be we’re all such delicate stuff so easily fade away hold on to your dreams you’ll see them someday Your sons are rays of hope daughters streams of love they’re filling all the space down here but you can never get enough we’re all such delicate stuff so easily drift away stay close to your children you’ll know them someday We’ve all had visions and we’ve all dreamed dreams it’s so easy to forget sometimes it’s so hard to believe and we’re all such delicate stuff so easily melt away but dreams never die and visions won’t fail your dreams are your children and you’ll have them someday.

SOMETHING I BELIEVE There’s something I believe There’s something I believe I believe we’re not alone Mmmmmmmm God is with us On the long way home. There’s something I believe There’s something I believe I believe in miracles Mmmmmmmm God is with us Every breath we take. There’s something I believe There’s something I believe I believe we’ll be alright Mmmmmmmm God is with us Every day and night.

I don't have lyrics - I don't even know what they are myself any more as they were totally made up on the spot & I suspect they don't even make much sense.

Signs 04:55
SIGNS The autumn leaves are rust and brown because winter’s coming on when springtime blossoms burst into bloom we say that summer won’t be long the morning sky is bleeding red you know it’s going to rain and when the light at night is a fiery sight we say tomorrow is a sunny day We’ve got scientists and sages but when they speak we close our minds because depression can be contagious when you’re running out of time with earthquakes and famines people live their lives in fear you don’t have to be a prophet to see something big is very near Some people say love is on vacation but it’s going to return when the mountains shift and the sky splits and the elements will burn as the lightning dances in the clouds that every eye can see love’s children will respond with joy and so I hope will we We can read the signs of the seasons why don’t we read the signs of the times?
